A Columbus man is asking Mayor Andrew Ginther to honor the city’s native son and wrestling legend “Macho Man” Randy Savage by erecting a statue of him in Downtown Columbus.

Joe Chapman set up an online petition at Change.org and had 1,300 supporters as of 9 a.m. Thursday.

The page states: “Randy Mario Poffo, Also known as Macho Man Randy Savage is known the world over as one of the world’s best Professional Wrestlers of all time. During Savage’s 32 Year Pro Wrestling Career, he held over 20 championships, including the WWF and WCW World Heavy Weight title and is a WWE Hall of Famer. Randy Savage also wrestled in what most considered the best wrestling match of all time in front of 93,000 fans at Wrestlemania 3.”

Savage (AKA Randy Mario Poffo) was born in Columbus in 1952. The son of pro wrestler Angelo Poffo, Savage was hugely popular in the 1980’s as “Macho Man” during the heyday of the World Wrestling Federation — now known as the WWE, or World Wrestling Entertainment.

Savage won six world championships between the WWF and World Champion Wrestling, or WCW.

Savage died from cardiac arrhythmia on May 20, 2011, in Florida. He suffered a heart attack while he was driving.

Mar 10, 2016 — Wow,
Totally amazing that in just a matter of a couple of days we got 500 signatures with nothing more than word of mouth and twitter.

We even got support for Lanny Poffo himself, Randy’s Brother who said:

“Randy dedicated himself to giving everything he had, in or out of the ring!”

If you have signed it. Awesome. Share with others. Retweet, share on Facebook. We would love to get 1000 signatures by the end of the weekend and I think we can do it!

Thanks so much!
